Make Rubrics Work for You in D2L
Limited Capacity seats available

Specific challenges or issues you will address Faculty is challenged to develop rubrics with meaningful, objective criteria for assignments. Using rubrics is time and labor intensive. Development of rubrics in D2L is not intuitive and may not be well suited to a rubric you have already developed. Key concepts: Define a rubric and its use as an assessment, evaluation and feedback tool. Discuss how objectives and competencies can be assessed using a rubric. Develop a rubric using course objectives or competencies US Healthcare Systems has been delivered as a classroom course and was modified Summer 2014 as an online course. This course has a policy analysis paper assignment that addresses several of the course objectives and competencies and was an important assessment tool for the course. A grading rubric was developed to evaluate this paper and link it to course objectives and competencies. The rubric was also designed to give students a clear description of the expectations for the paper and how points would be assigned for the paper. This rubric in turn was modified for D2L so that the online students could get feedback similar to the classroom student. The use of a rubric in D2L also saved time for the instructor and allowed the instructor to provide more specific feedback. Adapting the rubric to D2L was challenging as the default settings did not align with the scoring scheme of the rubric. Several different help screens identified how the rubric could be modified to customize the rubric for the instructor. This session will be experiential with participants developing a rubric n D2L based on an objective for a course they teach. Participants will gain hands on experience in rubric development in D2L.
